The Need for Vitamin C

by

Vitamin C is one of the most essential vitamins we need for our body. Vitamin C helps prevent a number of diseases by giving our immune system a boost so we become less susceptible to developing diseases. Vitamin C is one vitamin you can take with food or without food. You can take vitamin C supplements or get your dose of vitamin C by eating foods, particularly juices, that are natural sources of vitamin C. Good sources of vitamin C are broccoli, cauliflower, lemon juice, mustard greens, oranges, papaya, parsley, and peppers.
Based on studies, taking high amount of vitamin C does not present any advantages. While taking too much vitamin C is not recommended, you need to be sure your body is not deficient in the vitamin either. Vitamin C deficiency is characterized by swollen gums, nosebleeds, and unexplained weakness. Vitamin deficiency is very common nowadays, with poor diet and alcoholism being the primary reasons.
Vitamin C is one vitamin that the ligaments and tendons throughout our body need. Without vitamin C, the ligaments and tendons can become weak and unhealthy. You may need to take vitamin C supplements and vitamin E, but this will depend on your current state of health. Vitamin C and vitamin E together can bring about a beneficial impact to your health and body. It is important that you talk to your doctor before you start taking vitamin supplements. Your doctor can determine whether you have a vitamin C deficiency, and if you do, let you know how much vitamin C supplements you should be taking in every day.
Vitamin C is among the more well-known antioxidants. It is effective in protecting your skin from getting damaged by the sun's ultraviolet rays. Vitamin C also has restorative properties; it has been found to be effective in reversing the harmful effects of the sun if your skin already has sustained some radiation damage. It will not take long for you to notice significant improvements on your skin if you start taking vitamin C every day, whether in supplement form or in your diet. When used together, vitamins C and E can cause the scars and other flaws on your skin to become less visible, and in some cases heal.
A lot of fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamin C, although oranges are exceptionally high in vitamin C. You can get your daily vitamin C dose by drinking fresh orange juice. You can drink it in the morning, and you can snack on a few oranges throughout the day. However, you can increase your vitamin C intake by taking vitamin supplements along with your meal. If you decide to take a vitamin supplement, make sure you read the label. Take note of the amount of vitamin C in the supplement. Stay away from time-released vitamin C supplements since their effectiveness has not been scientifically established at this time. If you are undecided as to which vitamin C supplement to buy, your doctor is always the best person to ask.

Getting the Energy You Need from Vitamins

by

It is most common for doctors to hear their patients complain that they lack energy or are suffering from chronic fatigue. These patient complaints are almost universal and not a few people are constantly seeking for the best supplements with the most vitamins that can provide them the energy that they so need. Note that the body really needs all the vitamins to stay strong, healthy, and in top shape.
There are many vitamins and supplements available and one of the top choices by many is folic acid for energy. Folic acid falls under the B vitamin category and it is known to increase a person’s energy levels. Although what you may want is energy-providing vitamins, you ought to choose one that fends off fatigue too. You can find a number of vitamins and supplements that can help you fight fatigue and keep you alert and active.
Not many people are aware of NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydrogen)but it is a very powerful vitamin that provides much energy. Those people who are regularly taking vitamins would immediately see the difference once they start taking NADH. It may have a complicated way of working in the body but it is often prescribed for chronic fatigue. Other vitamins that you can take in order to get additional energy are gingko biloba and the MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)supplement.
One word of caution, though. Gingko biloba is a blood thinner so if your current medications already includes a blood thinning agent like aspirin, be sure to consult your doctor or other health provider before taking the supplement. You may want gingko biloba for its energy giving property but if you take the supplement together with aspirin, you might unknowingly thin your blood further than is needed and put your health at great risk. Be sure to get a prior clearance from your physician to avoid any potential medical complications.
Actually, you ought to consult your doctor before taking any energy-giving vitamin. If you have a prior health condition or if you are being treated for other serious ailments, it may not be good for you to take this type of vitamin that can take a toll on your heart. Thus, it is necessary to pre-check with your health provider and always listen to his advice. You may be given a few physical examinations to determine the best type of vitamins that are appropriate for your condition.
And talking of vitamins and supplements, you should realize that there are many ways for you to increase your energy levels. Even if you are far advanced in age and you want to be more active or if you are a young athlete who wants to be more energetic, there are a number of vitamin options available for your particular need. However, do not just buy these vitamins over the counter. Make sure that you consult your physician to know which vitamins are not advisable for your condition.

The Need to Take Vitamins and Supplements Daily

by

Vitamins and supplements provide tremendous curative benefits to help you recover from various illnesses. And even if you're a healthy person, you still stand to benefit from taking vitamins and supplements. In fact, vitamins and supplements are best used by healthy people to maintain wellness instead of taking them when illness has already set in. Vitamins and supplements are also of much help to the sick, particularly in correcting many nutrient deficiencies they may have.
The thing is we lose much of the necessary nutrients by how we live our lives every day. Most of today’s lifestyles are not healthy. For one, many Americans do not get to eat the right amount of servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Then, the penchant for cigarettes, fast food, alcohol, and caffeine uses up the already deficient nutrients in our body that we never get to replenish.
If you feel tired and spent, fix yourself by taking a quality multivitamin to restock on the nutrients your body lacks. Multivitamin tablets are relatively cheap and you should not have a hard time taking them. They contain most of the vitamins and supplements in recommended doses you need daily to remain in good health. For each multivitamin tablet you take, you get vitamins A, B complex, C, D, and E, calcium, chromium, copper, magnesium, potassium, selenium, and zinc.
If you are fond of drinking coffee or soda, the caffeine depletes your body’s supply of zinc, potassium, biotin, and inositol. The mineral zinc strengthens your immune system and increases your resistance to the common cold and flu. Potassium helps in the regulation of your blood pressure. Do remember that when taking vitamins and supplement to compensate for what is lost to caffeine, you should take them neither with coffee nor soda but with water. If you take the vitamins together with any caffeinated drink, the caffeine will only thwart the benefits of the vitamin.
Another thing that you have to be mindful of is when you eat a lot of bacon, cured ham, and sausage. Always check the list of ingredients for nitrates because this salt robs your body of vitamins C and E, niacin, and selenium. Now, vitamins C and E are two indispensable vitamins because you need them to protect yourself against heart disease, brain malfunction, cancer, premature aging and a host of other diseases.
Imbibing too much alcohol is one of the worst things you can do for your body. When there is an excess of alcohol in your system, you get to lose whatever vitamins and supplements you managed to store in your body. Specifically, you waste vitamins B complex, C, D, E and K, and magnesium because of alcohol. These same vitamins are needed in most of your bodily functions, so stay away from alcohol if you can help it.
Oral contraceptives can also cause the depletion of vitamins B complex, C, D, and E. If you must use oral contraceptives, replace those vitamins as they are critical in staying healthy. Ask your doctor on how his prescribed oral contraceptives will affect your body supply of vitamins, more particularly if you intend to get pregnant later on. This information is relevant to avoid possible birth defects. Also, intake of supplemental estrogen can deplete your levels of folic acid and vitamin B6. If you're already menopausal or experiencing some other conditions related to age, you will need to replenish your supply of vitamins and supplements to help in the normal function of your body.

Simple Post-Partum Depression Cures

by

Post-Partum Depression is a debilitating, albeit extremely common, condition that affects new mothers everywhere. Medication is of course one of the standard remedies, but before you opt for it, there are other, simpler solutions which could very well get you back on your feet without modifying your metabolism.. Here are several of them, drawn from accounts of actual users:

> Go to bed early and try to get a good night’s sleep
> Lie down next to your heater vent and feel its comforting warmth
> Stroll in the park amongst the ducks, watching what they do
> Do things with your hands, perhaps a craft
> Work in the garden, watering plants and pulling up weeds; each is calming in its own way
> Buy yourself a fancy cup of coffee, savor it’s fine taste and aroma
> Play with your kids and make plans with them for what you will do together when you are feeling better
> See a therapist regularly and make sure you are totally candid with him
> See a doctor regularly and make sure you are totally candid with him
> Stay away from alcohol and other depressants

> Have a relaxing bubble bath or a shower with something sweet to eat and drink; play soothing music while you are bathing
> Keep a journal about your feelings: it helps to externalize them
> Exercise regularly: this releases feel-good chemicals (endorphins) into your bloodstream
> Join and participate in online forums for post-partum depression; discuss your problem with others who have it, seek their advice and enjoy the comfort of a loving community
> Take part in activities with family and friends
> Read a good book
> Go visiting
> Call a close friend and talk to her/him
> Go for a drive
> Bake something; this will direct your attention to a subject other than parenting and refresh your mind
> Call your mom and talk to her about your problem. This could be the single most effective therapy for your situation, because she loves you, is deeply concerned about you and will make time to listen to you
> Ask your mom to visit for some days. She could help with your chores and thus create some personal time for you to do the other things mentioned here
> Put baby in her stroller and go out for a walk
> Let yourself wallow for a bit with no pressure and all pleasure - stay in your PJs, eat junk food, mope a bit
> Cuddle with your kids and if you feel like it, have a good cry while doing so. Realize there are people who truly love you (can't help but feel happy when your kids are giggling and rolling on the floor with you)
> Go to the beach if there is one nearby – look at the ocean and breathe the sea air
> Go shopping (nothing like good old-fashioned retail therapy!), or go window-shopping
> Have a long, deep chat with your dear husband, followed by a long, long cuddle and sweet kisses!
